| If you only buy one trance compilation all year, make sure it's Revolution from Dutch club legend DJ Tiesto. The most celebrated DJ in the Netherlands, it's easy to see why he commands such praise, mainly because over two CDs (Bright and Dark) of primetime floor-filler, there's rarely a dull moment. Listening to disc one requires very little effort; in fact the celestial brightness and bouncing melody of Goldenscan's "Sunrise" is equally effective sat in an armchair as it is on the dance floor. In any case, get yourself comfortable for whispering, gossamer vocals, crisp analogue breakdowns and Oakey-style riffage. Over on disc two the mood veers from assured, bass-driven monsters like Bullitt's "Cried To Dream" to the harder, stabbier assault of Kamaya Painter's "Wasteland" and the dark gothic fantasy that is Ballroom's "Passenger". If you thought trance was all soulless repetition, Tiesto proves it's still a sound to be reckoned with. --Paul Tierney |
